MLK Day: A Look at His Dream Community Art Project
Black Collar Party’s A Look at His Dream began on January 20, 2025, at Becker Elementary School in Austin, Texas, as a collaborative art experience honoring the life, legacy, and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Working with the school community, BCP developed an interactive art installation featuring historical portraits, inspirational quotations, original artwork, and reflections contributed by participating students and families. The project also introduced an illustrated coloring book designed to encourage creative engagement with civil rights history. Returning to Becker Elementary on January 20, 2026, Black Collar Party expanded the experience with new artistic activities exploring the history of the Civil Rights Movement and its continued relevance today. Through illustrated portraits, creative writing, and handmade posters, participants were encouraged to reflect on Dr. King’s vision and express their own hopes for their communities. Led by BCP artists Alexander Porter and Isaiah Rogers, the project continued to bring art, education, and collective expression together. Building on these experiences, Black Collar Party is preparing its most ambitious iteration for January 18, 2027, in collaboration with Gullett Elementary School. The upcoming event will feature interactive art activities, a collaborative installation, and a newly adapted print edition of the A Look at His Dream coloring book. The project will extend beyond the day of celebration through an installation showcasing the community’s contributions. What began as a collaborative school art project has grown into an annual creative tradition, bringing artists, educators, students, and families together to explore history, celebrate creativity, and reflect on the work of building more equitable communities.
